Who Notabene is
Notabene was founded in 2020 by people who had run early Bitcoin companies, to put the FATF Travel Rule into practice for the crypto industry. It connects virtual asset service providers so they can exchange sender and recipient data, check self-hosted wallets and authorise transfers with their counterparties.
Exchanges, custodians, payment providers, banks and stablecoin issuers use it, and it has grown into stablecoin payments as well. It works across Travel Rule protocols rather than betting on one, which is why it is one of the Travel Rule providers our compliance reporting module connects to.
What it does in your platform
Compliance reporting
Carries the Travel Rule data for your customers' crypto transfers above the thresholds: who sends, who receives, and through which provider. Incoming data is checked before funds are credited, and every exchange of data is recorded next to the transfer for your compliance team.
How the connection works
One connector in the compliance reporting module talks to Notabene's API. Notabene's credentials stay in your platform's secrets, and its answers reach the module as webhooks signed for each endpoint.
A customer withdraws crypto
To an address at another exchange. Above your threshold, the module creates the transfer in Notabene with the sender and recipient details.
Notabene finds the counterparty
It works out which provider controls the destination address, from its network directory, your address book or a blockchain analytics lookup.
The data travels
Notabene sends the transfer details to the counterparty, over its own network or another Travel Rule protocol the counterparty uses, and applies the policies you set up.
The counterparty answers
Its decision, or a request for more information, comes back to the module as a signed webhook event and shows up next to the transfer in the backoffice.
Deposits work the other way
When another provider sends your customer crypto, its data arrives through Notabene and is checked before the funds are credited.
The record stays
Every message, decision and wallet proof is kept with the transfer, ready for your regulator and your auditors.
Next to other providers
Counterparties do not all use the same Travel Rule network. Notabene's answer is interoperability: it connects to other protocols and providers, so your customers can send to, and receive from, exchanges that work with someone else.
The Travel Rule checks, the review in the backoffice and the records belong to the module, not to Notabene. Moving to another Travel Rule provider later does not change your apps, and past transfers keep their records.
When Notabene fits best
A strong fit when
- Your customers send crypto to many exchanges and custodians, on different Travel Rule networks.
- You want counterparty discovery, data exchange and self-hosted wallet checks from a single provider.
- You prefer a hosted service, with no Travel Rule software to run yourself.
Also worth a look
- Self-hosted software such as 21 Analytics, when Travel Rule data must stay on your own servers.
- A direct TRP connection, for counterparties that speak the open protocol.
How we get you live
The contract
We help you get your Notabene account and contract in place, set up for your markets and your licence.
The policies
With your compliance team, we set the thresholds, the data you collect and the policies Notabene applies to each kind of transfer, by jurisdiction where needed.
The keys
The API credentials and the webhook signing secret go into your platform's secrets and nowhere else, so every event is proven to come from Notabene.
A full test run
Transfers run in Notabene's testing environment against its RoboVASPs, test counterparties that answer automatically, before your first real customer transfer.
