Who Sumsub is

Sumsub is a verification platform founded in 2015 and based in London. From one account it checks identity documents and faces, verifies companies and the people who own them, screens customers against sanctions and politically exposed persons lists, and monitors transactions.

Fintechs, crypto exchanges, trading platforms and payment companies are among its biggest users, which is why it is one of the providers our KYC / AML module connects to.

What it does in your platform

  • KYC / AML

Verifies every customer at sign-up: an ID document, a liveness selfie and, where your licence asks for it, proof of address, then screens them against sanctions and PEP lists. Results land in the module's review queue, next to the checks of any other provider you use.

  • Merchant onboarding

Verifies business customers: company registry data, the ownership structure and the identity of every beneficial owner, so a merchant is approved in the same flow they apply in.

How the connection works

One connector in the KYC / AML module talks to Sumsub's API. Your apps never hold Sumsub's keys; they only receive a short-lived token for the customer in front of them.

  1. A customer signs up

In your mobile or web app. The module works out which checks apply from the customer's country and risk.

  2. An applicant is created

The module creates the applicant in Sumsub at the verification level you set up, and gets an access token for this customer only.

  3. The customer is verified

Sumsub's SDK opens inside your app for the document photo and the liveness selfie: on the web, on iOS and Android, and in our Flutter apps through Sumsub's Flutter plugin.

  4. Sumsub reviews

It checks the document and the face, and runs the screening your verification level includes.

  5. The result comes back

A signed webhook gives the module the outcome. Green opens the account, red stops it, and anything that needs a person goes to your team's review queue in the backoffice.

  6. And keeps watching

Ongoing monitoring and periodic re-checks arrive the same way, and every decision is logged with who made it and why.

Next to other providers

Sumsub does not have to be your only verification provider. The module can route customers by country to the provider with the best coverage there, fall back to another one if a provider is unavailable, and compare pass rates and costs side by side.

The onboarding screens and the review queue belong to the module, not to the provider. Adding a provider next to Sumsub, or moving away from it later, does not change your app, and past checks stay in your records, linked to the provider that made them.

When Sumsub fits best

A strong fit when

  • You want identity checks, business checks and AML screening from a single provider.
  • Your customers come from many countries and carry many kinds of documents.
  • You run crypto, trading or payments, the industries Sumsub works with most.

Also worth a look

  • A provider with deeper coverage in one market, routed next to Sumsub for those customers.
  • A provider you already have a contract with: it becomes a connector too.

How we get you live

  • The contract

We help you get your Sumsub account and contract in place, set up for your markets and your licence.

  • The checks

We set up the verification levels with you: which documents and checks apply, for which countries and risk levels.

  • The keys

The API keys and the webhook secret go into your platform's secrets and nowhere else, so every result is proven to come from Sumsub.

  • A full test run

The whole flow runs in Sumsub's sandbox, from sign-up to the review queue, before your first real customer.

Questions

Asked about this connector.

How do we get started with Sumsub?

Talk to us. We help you get the Sumsub contract in place, set up the verification levels your licence needs and connect it to your platform, then test the whole flow in the sandbox before your first real customer.

Can we use Sumsub for some countries only?

Yes. Routing rules decide which provider verifies which customers, by country or risk, and they change without a new release.

Where does the verification data live?

Sumsub stores the documents and selfies it collects. The platform keeps the result, the decision trail and a reference to each check, so your team can review every case in the backoffice.

What if we want to leave Sumsub later?

You switch the provider in the configuration, and add a connector if we do not have one for the new provider yet. Your app and your review queue stay the same, and past results stay in your records.
