Who TRM Labs is

TRM Labs is a blockchain intelligence company with offices in San Francisco, Washington DC, London, Paris and other cities. Its platform traces funds across blockchains and attributes wallets to real-world entities, for compliance teams at crypto businesses and financial institutions, and for investigators and government agencies.

Its compliance products include Wallet Screening, which assesses a wallet's risk before a transaction is authorised, and Transaction Monitoring for deposits and withdrawals. Wallet Screening is why TRM Labs is one of the providers our KYC / AML module connects to.

What it does in your platform

  • KYC / AML

Screens the crypto wallets your customers deal with, such as the address a customer withdraws to, before the transaction is authorised. TRM's risk categories and attribution meet your risk settings, and risky wallets go to the review queue.

How the connection works

The KYC / AML module calls TRM's screening API from your platform, with the API key in your platform's secrets. No app ever talks to TRM directly.

  1. A withdrawal is requested

A customer asks to send crypto to an external wallet address.

  2. TRM screens the address

Before anything is signed, the module submits the address to TRM, which returns the risks it finds and the entity behind the wallet, where known.

  3. Your settings apply

The result is checked against the risk settings your compliance team chose: categories such as sanctions or scams, and ownership, counterparty or indirect exposure.

  4. Cleared or stopped

A clean wallet lets the withdrawal go on to signing. A risky one stops it, and the case waits in the review queue for your team.

  5. Kept for audit

Every screening, result and decision stays in the customer's record, so your team can show the regulator what was checked and when.

Next to other providers

TRM Labs is one of three wallet screening providers in the module, next to Chainalysis and Elliptic. You can use one or several, and the review queue stays the same.

For monitoring transfers over time, the compliance reporting module works with Chainalysis KYT, Elliptic and ComplyAdvantage. Switching wallet screening providers later does not change your apps, and past results stay in your records.

When TRM Labs fits best

A strong fit when

  • You want every withdrawal address screened before the transfer is authorised.
  • Your compliance team wants fine control over which risks count, by category and by type of exposure.
  • You support many chains and tokens, stablecoins and DeFi tokens included.

Also worth a look

  • Chainalysis or Elliptic, if you want one provider for wallet screening and for transaction monitoring in compliance reporting.
  • A provider you already have a contract with: it becomes a connector too.

How we get you live

  • The contract

We help you get your TRM Labs account and contract in place for wallet screening, set up for the chains and assets you support.

  • The risk settings

We set the risk settings with your compliance team: which categories and types of exposure matter, and the levels that stop a withdrawal.

  • The keys

The API key goes into your platform's secrets and nowhere else, and every call to TRM is made from the platform.

  • A full test run

Before go-live we screen known test addresses and check that each one ends as it should: cleared, or stopped in the review queue.

Questions

Asked about this connector.

How do we get started with TRM Labs?

Talk to us. We help you get the TRM Labs contract in place, set the risk settings with your compliance team and connect it to your platform, then test it with known addresses before go-live.

When is a wallet screened?

Before the transaction is authorised. When a customer asks to withdraw to an address, the module screens it first, and only a wallet within your risk settings goes on to signing.

Can TRM tell us who is behind a wallet?

Where TRM has attributed it, yes: the result names the entity behind the wallet next to the risks it found.

Can we add another wallet screening provider later?

Yes. Chainalysis and Elliptic are connectors in the same module, and adding one changes nothing in your apps or your review queue.
