Who Nuvei is

Nuvei is a payments company headquartered in Montreal and led by its founder, Phil Fayer. Listed in Toronto and New York until November 2024, it was then taken private by Advent International together with Fayer, Novacap and CDPQ, and in June 2026 it agreed to acquire Payoneer.

It offers pay-ins, payouts, acquiring and a wide range of local payment methods. In Europe it holds e-money licences from the UK's Financial Conduct Authority, the Central Bank of Cyprus and the Bank of Lithuania, a payment institution licence from De Nederlandsche Bank, and principal membership of Visa and Mastercard. That is why it is one of the acquirers our card acquiring module connects to.

What it does in your platform

  • Card acquiring

Acquires your merchants' card payments online and in apps, with captures, refunds and settlement matched to the ledger, and notifications that keep the module in step. For taps on a merchant's phone, the module uses an acquirer with tap-on-phone support.

How the connection works

The card acquiring module calls Nuvei's API from your platform, and Nuvei confirms each payment with a Direct Merchant Notification. Your apps only receive the session token of the payment in front of them.

  1. An order is opened

The module opens the order with Nuvei from your platform and passes the session token to Nuvei's SDK, on the web or in your app.

  2. The buyer pays

The buyer enters a card or picks Apple Pay or Google Pay, and 3-D Secure runs when the risk calls for it.

  3. Nuvei authorises

Nuvei sends the payment over the card network to the issuer, and the app shows the answer at once.

  4. The notification confirms

A Direct Merchant Notification gives the module the final status. The module rebuilds its checksum with your secret key before trusting it, then posts the payment to the ledger.

  5. Settlement is matched

Nuvei settles the merchant's funds, and the module matches the settlement to the ledger, so merchants see what they are paid.

Next to other providers

Nuvei is one of several acquirers in the card acquiring module. Each merchant's payments go to the acquirer that fits their market, traffic can be split between several for resilience, and every payment lands in the same ledger and backoffice.

Taps on merchants' phones go to an acquirer with tap-on-phone support in that country, while Nuvei carries online and in-app payments. Adding or changing an acquirer later does not change the app your merchants use.

When Nuvei fits best

A strong fit when

  • Your merchants sell online and in apps across many countries and need local acquiring.
  • You want card payments next to a wide range of local payment methods from one provider.
  • You want a provider with e-money licences in the UK and the EU.

Also worth a look

  • An acquirer with tap on phone, for merchants who take payments in person.
  • A provider you already have a contract with: it becomes a connector too.

How we get you live

  • The contract

We help you get your Nuvei account and contract in place, with the Nuvei entity that covers your merchants' countries.

  • Methods and notifications

We set up the payment methods, 3-D Secure, network tokens and the address Nuvei sends its notifications to.

  • The keys

Your merchant secret key, which also proves every notification is genuine, goes into your platform's secrets and nowhere else.

  • A full test run

Every flow runs first in Nuvei's integration environment, from the first payment to refunds and settlement, before your first real merchant.

Questions

Asked about this connector.

How do we get started with Nuvei?

Talk to us. We help you get the Nuvei contract in place, set up the payment methods and notifications and connect them to your platform, then test the whole flow in Nuvei's integration environment.

Who owns Nuvei?

Advent International, together with founder Phil Fayer, Novacap and CDPQ, since Nuvei went private in November 2024. In June 2026 Nuvei agreed to acquire Payoneer.

How does the platform know a Nuvei notification is genuine?

Each notification carries a checksum that Nuvei builds from your secret key and the payment's details. The module rebuilds it and only trusts notifications that match.

Can we use Nuvei for some merchants only?

Yes. Each merchant's payments go to the acquirer that fits their market, and your merchants' app stays the same whichever acquirer handles them.
