Who Snowflake is
Snowflake is a cloud data platform company founded in 2012 and listed on the New York Stock Exchange. A Snowflake account runs on Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud or Microsoft Azure, in a region you choose, and lets many teams work on the same data at once.
Companies across industries use it as the central place where their teams analyse and share data. That is why it is one of the analytics destinations our Ledger and Admin backoffice modules connect to.
What it does in your platform
Ledger
Receives every entry, balance and reconciliation result from the ledger, so finance and data teams analyse the platform's money in SQL, next to the rest of your company's data.
Admin backoffice
Receives customer, transaction and case records from the backoffice, so operations and compliance dashboards run on the same data your teams act on.
How the connection works
One connector streams the platform's data into Snowflake with Snowpipe Streaming. It signs in as a dedicated Snowflake user with key-pair authentication, not a password.
An entry is booked
A customer's transfer is recorded in the ledger as balanced debits and credits, in real time.
It streams in
The connector appends the row to your table through Snowpipe Streaming, straight from the platform, with no files to stage in between.
In order, exactly once
On a named channel, Snowpipe Streaming ingests rows in order and exactly once within that channel, so a retry does not create a second entry.
It stays in your account
The tables live in your Snowflake account, on the cloud and in the region where the account was opened.
Teams query it
Analysts work in SQL or the BI tool they already use, with the platform's numbers next to the rest of your company's data.
Next to other providers
Snowflake sits next to the ledger, not instead of it. The ledger stays the book of record, your accounting system receives the daily journals, and Snowflake holds the full detail for analysis.
If part of your company works in BigQuery, or a PostgreSQL reporting database is enough to start, those are connectors of their own. Changing the destination later leaves your apps and the ledger as they are.
When Snowflake fits best
A strong fit when
- Your data team already works in Snowflake.
- You want the platform's data on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, in a region you choose.
- Finance, risk and product teams need to query the same data side by side, each in its own virtual warehouse.
Also worth a look
- BigQuery, if your company runs on Google Cloud and its data team works there.
- A PostgreSQL reporting database, for a smaller first setup.
How we get you live
The contract
We help you get your Snowflake account and contract in place, on the cloud and in the region you choose, or connect the account your data team runs.
The tables
We agree the databases, schemas and tables with your data team, from ledger entries and balances to backoffice cases, and the roles that can read them.
The keys
The connector's private key stays in your platform's secrets, and its Snowflake role can write to its own tables and nothing more.
A full test run
A test environment streams into a separate test database first, and your analysts check row counts and totals before production data flows.
