Who Twelve Data is

Twelve Data is a market data company based in Singapore. It serves real-time and historical data for stocks, ETFs, forex, crypto, funds and commodities, with fundamentals such as dividends, splits and company profiles, through a REST API and a WebSocket stream.

Its exchange list shows, venue by venue, whether data is real-time, delayed or end of day, and it carries Cboe Europe's real-time feed for European stocks. That reach, from US markets to European venues such as the Bucharest Stock Exchange, is why both our market data and portfolio modules connect to it.

What it does in your platform

  • Market data

Supplies live quotes and candles for stocks, ETFs and currency pairs: the WebSocket for live prices, REST for history. The module shows each user real-time or delayed prices, as your licences allow.

  • Portfolios

Provides reference data: the instrument list, dividends and splits, exchange schedules and exchange rates. The portfolio module uses it to describe each holding, show its income and value it in several currencies.

How the connection works

One connector serves both modules: Twelve Data's REST API for reference data and history, and its WebSocket for live prices. The API key stays in the platform's secrets, and your apps read prices from the platform.

  1. Instruments are matched

Each stock, ETF or currency pair is matched by symbol and exchange through Twelve Data's reference endpoints, so the same ticker on two venues never mixes.

  2. History loads

Time series from the REST API back the candles, from one-minute bars to monthly ones.

  3. Live prices stream

The module subscribes to price events on Twelve Data's WebSocket for the instruments you list.

  4. Licences are applied

Each user sees real-time or delayed prices according to the licences in your name.

  5. Holdings get their details

Dividends, splits and exchange schedules feed the portfolio module, and exchange rates value each holding in the investor's currency.

  6. Silence is caught

If the stream stops, prices fail over to the next source, and a stale price is flagged instead of shown.

Next to other providers

In market data, Twelve Data sits next to LSEG, Alpha Vantage and Nasdaq Data Link. The module combines vendors, filters bad ticks, fails over when a feed goes quiet and enforces each real-time licence per user.

In portfolios, it works alongside the broker or custodian that holds the assets: the broker's records say what an investor owns, and Twelve Data describes and values it. Replacing Twelve Data later changes the configuration, not your apps.

When Twelve Data fits best

A strong fit when

  • You want one API for stock, ETF and FX prices and the reference data around them.
  • Your investors hold instruments from several markets, in the US and in Europe.
  • You want to know, exchange by exchange, which data is real-time and which is delayed.

Also worth a look

  • LSEG, when you need the depth of a large institutional data vendor.
  • Nasdaq Data Link, when US exchange data straight from Nasdaq matters most.

How we get you live

  • The contract

We help you get your Twelve Data account and contract in place, covering the exchanges and real-time data your users will see.

  • The coverage

We map your instruments to Twelve Data symbols and exchanges with you, and set which users see real-time and which see delayed prices.

  • The keys

The API key goes into your platform's secrets and nowhere else; apps and browsers never see it.

  • A full test run

Prices, history and reference data run in staging against your instrument list before any investor sees them.

Questions

Asked about this connector.

How do we get started with Twelve Data?

Talk to us. We help you get the Twelve Data contract in place, map your instruments and licences, and run both modules in staging before launch.

Does Twelve Data cover European exchanges?

Yes. Its exchange list includes European venues such as Euronext, Xetra and the Bucharest Stock Exchange, and it carries Cboe Europe's real-time feed for European stocks.

Do all users get real-time prices?

Only those your licences cover. Twelve Data shows per exchange whether data is real-time, delayed or end of day, and the module applies your licences user by user.

Why does the portfolio module use Twelve Data?

The broker says what an investor owns. Twelve Data adds what each holding is, its dividends and splits, and the exchange rates that value it in the investor's currency.
