What is treasury management?

In short

Treasury management is the work of making sure a company has the right amount of money, in the right currency and the right account, at the moment each payment falls due. Treasury management covers cash positions, liquidity forecasts, funding, foreign exchange risk and the bank relationships behind them.

What treasury management covers

The function is the same in a retailer and in a payment institution, and covers:

  • Cash visibility: balances across every bank, provider and wallet, in one view
  • Liquidity: forecasting money in and out, and keeping a buffer
  • Funding: moving money so that each account has what it needs
  • FX: converting currencies and hedging exposure to rate moves
  • Counterparty risk: limits on how much sits with any one bank or provider
  • Yield: placing surplus cash safely

Treasury in a payments or crypto business

A payment firm's treasury is unusual because most of the money is not its own. Customer funds are safeguarded or segregated and cannot be used to run the business, so treasury manages two pools that must never mix: clients' money and the firm's.

Speed raises the stakes. Instant payments and payouts leave at any hour, so accounts with each bank, scheme and payout partner are funded in advance, and treasury decides how much sits idle in each.

A crypto business adds assets and networks: hot wallet floats, stablecoin balances, and conversion between them and bank money.

What a platform gives treasury

The ledger is treasury's source: positions per currency and per account as they change, forecasts from scheduled payouts and expected settlements, alerts when a balance falls below its floor, and rules that sweep or top up accounts automatically.

Treasury management, cash management or accounting?

Cash management
The day-to-day part: balances, payments and collections. Treasury management includes it and adds funding, risk and investment.
Accounting
Records what has happened. Treasury looks forward, at what will be needed and where.
Safeguarding
The legal duty to protect customers' funds. Treasury operates inside the limits it sets.
