How a card-present transaction works
The terminal and the chip exchange data, and the chip produces a cryptogram that is unique to the payment. The cardholder is verified by PIN, on the phone or watch, or not at all for a low-value contactless payment.
The terminal then sends the authorisation request, with the chip data, to the acquirer. The issuer validates the cryptogram along with the usual checks.
The Visa Core Rules of 18 April 2026 define the card-present environment by three conditions together: the card and the cardholder are physically present at the merchant or at an unattended terminal, an acceptance device is used, and no stored credential is used.
Who builds for card-present payments
Acquirers, terminal makers and point-of-sale software firms. The hardware and its payment software are certified before use, and a phone that accepts taps, a SoftPOS, is evaluated in place of a terminal.
Card-present acceptance has its own economics: fraud disputes are rarer, since the chip and the PIN did their work, and merchants expect next-day funds and terminals that keep working when the network is poor.
Card-present or card-not-present?
- Card-not-present transaction
- No terminal reads the card: the details are typed, stored or passed by an app. Authentication relies on 3-D Secure and data, not on the chip.
- Wallet payment
- A phone tapped on a terminal is card-present. The same wallet used inside an app or on a website is card-not-present.
