How omnichannel payments work
The usual obstacle is that in-store and online payments run through different providers, with different merchant IDs, tokens and reports. An omnichannel platform puts both behind one gateway and one data model.
The key piece is a shared token. When a card is used at a terminal or in the checkout, the platform maps it to the same customer-level token, so the business recognises the card wherever it appears next without storing the card number.
What omnichannel payments make possible
- Buy online, then collect or return in store
- Refund to the original card from any channel
- Pay in store with a card saved online
- Order an out-of-stock item at the till for home delivery
- One loyalty and fraud profile for each customer
- One reconciliation and settlement report for all channels
What an omnichannel set-up requires
Card-present and card-not-present payments differ in rules, fees and risk, so the platform keeps both sets of requirements behind one interface. That means terminals or SoftPOS, an online checkout, token management, and a ledger that reconciles every channel's settlements against orders.
The acquiring can be one acquirer for all channels, or several behind an orchestration layer. The single view comes from the platform, not from the acquirer.
Omnichannel, multichannel or orchestration?
- Multichannel
- Several channels, each with its own provider, data and reports. Omnichannel joins them.
- Payment orchestration
- Routes payments across several providers. An omnichannel platform may use orchestration, and adds in-store acceptance and shared tokens.
