What RegTech does
- Onboarding: identity verification, company checks and risk scoring
- Screening: sanctions, PEP and adverse media lists
- Transaction monitoring: rules and models that raise alerts
- Crypto: blockchain analytics and Travel Rule messaging
- Case management: alerts, investigations and an audit trail
- Reporting: regulatory returns, suspicious activity reports and tax data
Most of it is sold as APIs that a product calls at set moments: at sign-up, before a payment leaves, when a list changes.
How RegTech fits into a payments or crypto product
A typical stack combines several vendors behind one internal layer, which holds each customer's risk profile and the decisions made about it. That layer matters more than any single vendor: it records why an alert was closed, and it lets a vendor be replaced without rewriting the product.
Tuning is continuous work. Rules set too tight flood analysts with false positives, and rules set too loose miss what a regulator later finds.
What RegTech does not do
Buying a tool does not transfer a duty. The regulated firm answers for checks that a vendor runs on its behalf, so the firm chooses the settings, tests the results and explains the gaps.
A tool also decides nothing by itself in the hard cases. Whether to keep a customer, or to report a suspicion, is a judgement that a named person makes and records.
